Scaling & Root Planing
Since plaque that causes gum disease exists below the gum line, scaling and root planing need to be performed in order to effectively address it. If plaque and bacteria remains under our gums, it effects our bone levels and can cause irreversible damage and eventual tooth loss. During scaling, we gently break down plaque deposits that have formed beneath the gums. Following this, we perform root planing, which is designed to smooth out the tooth roots so they can begin to reattach to the gums. This also works to reduce the risk of the gums becoming reinfected.
Antibiotic Therapy
Scaling and root planing are key to treating gum disease, but it’s also important that your gums are receiving active treatment in between your routine follow-up appointments in Daniel Island. That’s why we have the option to use Arestin antibiotic therapy following your gum disease treatment. This product uses tiny microspheres filled with gel to promote healing of the gums before your next periodontal cleaning. During your follow-up, we’ll confirm the antibiotic is working as intended and make adjustments from there if needed.
